The 1844 Calamity Aboard the USS Princeton
Kerry Walters
In 1844, the USS Princeton was the most technologically sophisticated warship in the world. Its captain, Robert Stockton, and President John Tyler were both zealous expansionists, and they hoped that it would be the forerunner in a formidable steam-powered fleet. On a Potomac cruise intended to impress power brokers, the ships main gunthe Peacemakerexploded as the vessel neared Mount Vernon. Eight died horribly, while twenty others were injured. Two of Tylers most important cabinet members were instantly lost, and the president himself had a near missmaking it the worst physical disaster to befall a presidential administration. The tragedy set off an unpredictable wave of events that cost Tyler a second term, nearly scuttled plans to add Texas to the Union and stirred up sectional rancor that drove the nation closer to civil war. Author Kerry Walters chronicles this little-known disaster that altered the course of the nations history.
An award-winning author and editor of thirty books, Kerry Walters has been a professor at Gettysburg College for over a quarter century.

Note for the Community on Current Projects
Note for the Community on Current Projects
Hey, so as you know I have been working on the Combat Training patch for Black Ops. It was going well until the other day. I am stuck on menu files, not on modifying them but with compiling them into the mod. I get an error when I try to compile a mod with any menu file. Without menu files, the mod compiles fine, but I get a "Filesize > 0 assert" error when I use any file from the "ui_mp" raw folder. The internet says that people get this error when they didnt convert their files to game data but I have done that several times already (even so, menu files are raw files so they do not need to be converted anyway). The error Im getting typically happens to people when there is an error pertaining to files for weapon models or anything in 3D (that needs to be converted to game data), like there is something missing that the mod compiler needs to complete the mod. My only guess at this point is that my friend forgot to give me something when he uploaded the mod tools for me. Menu files are vital for this patch in order to fix the UI bugs with DLC maps and enable buttons like prestige mode. Until I get past this issue, I cant fix or improve anything. If any of you guys know anything about this, please leave a comment below and maybe we can figure this out together.
Ive also been working on RSE v24 for Modern Warfare 2. I dont have a changelog for you guys but I have gotten ranked private match working correctly now (matches will no longer always count as a loss). Ive also made some other cool improvements so stay tuned for a release in a couple of weeks.

VOCES ON PBS PRESENTS REBEL, PREMIERING
ON PBS FRIDAY, MAY 24, 2013 AT 10:00 P.M. ET
New Documentary Explores the Secret Life of Loreta Velazquez --
Cuban immigrant, Confederate Soldier turned Union Spy

Shrouded in mystery and long the subject of debate, the amazing story of Loreta Velazquez is one of the Civil Wars most gripping forgotten narratives. While the U.S. military may have recently lifted the ban on women in combat, Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a Cuban immigrant from New Orleans, was fighting in battle 150 years ago one of the estimated 1000 women who secretly served as soldiers during the American Civil War. Who was she? Why did she fight? And what made her so dangerous that she has been virtually erased from history? Directed by María Agui Carter, REBEL premieres as a special presentation of the Latino Public Broadcasting series VOCES ON PBS, airing nationally on PBS on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 10:00 p.m. ET (check local listings).
Deftly weaving lushly dramatized scenes of Loretas riveting tale with historical commentary and archival material, REBEL explores the story of a complex woman, a myth and the politics of national memory. The story of a wealthy Cuban planters daughter sent to New Orleans in 1849, REBEL chronicles Loretas rebellious relationship with her traditional family and her early marriage to an American soldier known only as William. After the devastating sudden death of William and her three young children, Loreta turned her grief into transformation. She embarked on a new secret life, disguising herself as a man and, under the name of Harry T. Buford, served first as a soldier in the Confederate Army and later as a Union spy.
REBEL is based on Loretas 600-page memoir, A Woman In Battle, which caused a sensation when it was published in 1876 and remains in print to this day. For over a century, Loreta was dismissed as a liar and a prostitute, but new evidence indicates she was no hoax. Loretas memoir gives us rare insight into war from a woman and a Latina s point of view. She was an immigrant serving her country by fighting for it, as so many generations have done. Growing up in New Orleans she naturally aligned herself with the South and even kept a slave, but records show she would end up spying for the North. She was a complex woman who ultimately turned against war as a solution to the worlds problems, says writer/director María Agui Carter. Although Loretas memoir, which most historians acknowledge to be somewhat embellished, was dismissed as a hoax for over a century, historians have recently discovered documents in the National Archives as well as newspaper articles and letters proving that she did indeed exist. Loreta Velazquez was a rebel who flouted all the rules to become a part of American history, says Ms. Agui Carter.
Were delighted to present REBEL as a special presentation of VOCES ON PBS, says Latino Public Broadcastings Executive Director Sandie Pedlow. The film rescues this fascinating story from obscurity, and shines a light on an amazing Cuban American woman who was not afraid to defy expectations and blaze her own path.
REBEL is a co-production of Iguana Films, L.L.C. and the Independent Television Service (ITVS), in association with WPBT2/Miami and Latino Public Broadcasting with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Video Review Rebel presented by Voces on PBS
Premiering on the PBS show Voces, May 24, 2013 is the hour long documentary titled Rebel.
Rebel recounts the story of Loreta Velazquez, a Cuban born woman who becomes a Confederate soldier before turning Union spy. This work, directed by Maria Agui Carter, is based upon Velasquezs post war memoir titled The Woman in Battle: The Civil War Narrative of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, Cuban Woman and Confederate Soldier (Wisconsin Studies in Autobiography)
.
Largely a forgotten figure, through the writings of Velazquez and the commentary of academics and historians such as Gary Gallagher we learn the story of a woman who could be considered a tragic figure who was ahead of her time.
Loreta was born to a well off family in Cuba who in 1849 sent her to New Orleans. Here her spiritedness began to show as she refused what appears to have been a prepared marriage. She eventually marries a white man (i.e. not Hispanic or black) who appears to only be known by the name William. They quickly have two children with a third on the way when William is sent by the army to Indian Territory. Loretta and her children move to St. Louis where her infant child dies days after birth and soon after her other two children die from a fever epidemic that sweeps through St. Louis.
As the political situation worsens war becomes apparent. William resigns his army commission and joins the Confederacy with his home state (I assume this to be a Texas regiment and not the United States Army but this is unclear in the documentary). He is sent to Pensacola, FL where he is killed though it is called an accident.
With no family, no home, and seemingly no country Loreta transforms herself into a Confederate soldier by the name of Harry T. Buford. As Buford she fights at Bull Run, Shiloh, and other locations being injured several times. While serving as a Confederate she acquires a slave by the name of Bob. Bob serves her well until escaping to apparent freedom at Shiloh. It is unclear the relationship with Bob and if he knew Loretas/Harrys secret.
In July 1863 it is discovered that Harry is a woman and Loreta is considered to possibly by a Union spy. This charge could mean death. General John Winder however frees her several days later now using her in the Secret Service Corps. Shortly there after she goes to work in Baltimore for the Union Secret Service.
In 1875 she and her book ran afoul of Jubal Early, he of the Lost Cause. Early, who is portrayed harshly in Rebel with a wild eyed and untamed look, refuses to believe her story and essentially calls her a female camp follower; or prostitute. For the most part she disappears though she does show in printed records until 1902. According to the documentary her burial location is unknown.
While seemingly short on detail this is still a worthwhile program to view. In the filmmakers defense there really is little detail about Velazquez available. The filmmakers have used her own limited writings for much of the dialogue. During this story we learn of the race issues common in the south during this period. We also see that Velazquez sees a changing in the role of money and finances as the war drags on. Where strongest however is where we learn about the overall role of women in the time period. It is estimated that maybe 500-1,000 served in the war. The role of a woman was not questioned in the mid 19th century. The clothing and appearance of a woman was not open for debate or interpretation. Sexual roles were firm and not to be changed. Society was not ready for women such as Loreta Velazquez.

Press Release LSU Press to release book on Secret Southern Society
Press Release LSU Press to release book on Secret Southern Society
Book Traces Expansion of Nineteenth-Century Secret Southern Society
Baton Rouge-Based on years of exhaustive and meticulous research, David C. Keehns study provides the first comprehensive analysis of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a secret southern society that initially sought to establish a slave-holding empire in the "Golden Circle" region of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Keehn reveals the origins, rituals, structure, and complex history of this mysterious group, including its later involvement in the secession movement. Members supported southern governors in precipitating disunion, filled the ranks of the nascent Confederate Army, and organized rearguard actions during the Civil War.
The Knights of the Golden Circle emerged in 1858 when a secret society formed by a Cincinnati businessman merged with the pro-expansionist Order of the Lone Star, which already had 15,000 members. In 1860, during their first attempt to create the Golden Circle, several thousand Knights assembled in southern Texas to "colonize" northern Mexico. Due to insufficient resources and organizational shortfalls, however, that filibuster failed. Later, the Knights shifted their focus and began pushing for disunion, spearheading pro secession rallies, and intimidating Unionists in the South.
According to Keehn, the Knights likely carried out a variety of other clandestine actions before the Civil War, including attempts by insurgents to take over federal forts in Virginia and North Carolina, and a planned assassination of Abraham Lincoln as he passed through Baltimore in early 1861 on the way to his inauguration. Once the fighting began, the Knights helped build the emerging Confederate Army and assisted with the pro-Confederate Copperhead movement in northern states. With the war all but lost, various Knights supported one of their members, John Wilkes Booth, in his plot to assassinate President Lincoln.
Keehns fast-paced, engaging narrative demonstrates that the Knights influence proved more substantial than historians have traditionally assumed and provides a new perspective on southern secession and the outbreak of the Civil War.
David C. Keehn is an attorney from Allentown, Pennsylvania, with a history degree from Gettysburg College and a juris doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
