Hoje eu vou falar sobre um gênero que adoro demais, e que sei bem que muita gente aqui no blog também deve gostar e as vezes não sabe o que exatamente define aquilo. É o sombrio Dark Fantasy, que dá um gostinho muito mais intenso a universos de fantasia, fugindo do padrão que conhecemos e agradando a maioria dos fãs de fantasia medieval.
Dark Fantasy são histórias em universos de fantasia (normalmente medieval), mas ao invés de usar aquele climinha mágico e épico, o foco é a decadência e o horror. Então são ambientes muito mais sombrios, não é aquela coisa de fadas e princesas soltando brilho enquanto andam (pode até ter, mas não é uma exceção em um mundo de trevas), mas sim uma civilização em decadência tentando sobreviver de forma brutal e sempre com medo. A sensação é de sufoco, de que todo mundo ta amaldiçoado e lutando frequentemente pra continuar vivo.
É muito fácil confundir fantasia normal com Dark Fantasy, isso porque na fantasia normal sempre acaba tendo um castelo macabro, um pântano com mortos vivos, etc... Porém isso não deve definir uma obra, o fato de terem essas coisas apenas torna essas obras com "elementos de Dark Fantasy", algo que não é grande coisa já que é muito difícil um universo medieval não ter o seu cafofo das trevas.
Dark Fantasy são obras como o jogo The Age of Decadence, em que você não pode confiar em absolutamente ninguém e deve pensar só em si mesmo. O mangá Berserk é uma imensa referência de Dark Fantasy, pois há um clima pesado de um mundo amaldiçoado. O conto A Máscara da Morte Rubra é outro que se encaixa no gênero, mostrando um reino inteiro sendo destruído por uma doença, enquanto uma parcela mínima se isola e finge que nada aconteceu.
Para obras que tem visual (filmes, séries, jogos, animes, etc...), um filtro sombrio é algo essencial para uma atmosfera Dark Fantasy puro, tem obras que acabam tendo essa essência roubada por causa do visual que é padrão de um universo medieval qualquer. É só ver The Witcher 3, que é bonito demais, com belas florestas o tempo todo, pôr do sol lindo, etc. Essas coisas existem em Dark Fantasy, mas não são o todo, são "pérolas" em meio às trevas.
Se você observar outros tipos de mídia em que The Witcher foi apresentado, como nos quadrinhos Os filhos da Raposa, vai perceber que a essência de Dark Fantasy é bem mais forte, pois você não tem a liberdade de ver o mundo maravilhoso, é fechado a uma história sombria onde todo mundo sabe que vai morrer e a maioria do tempo o ambiente é bem sombrio, o mesmo serve para A Casa de Vidro, que se passa em um pântano.
Alguns jogos que apresentam a essência pura de Dark Fantasy são Diablo, Dark Souls, Demonicon, Salt and Sanctuary, Blackthorne e Bound by Flame, mas naturalmente há vários outros que aproveitam bem a atmosfera da coisa e criam um ambiente super sombrio e um mundo sem esperança com uma história macabra.
Mas apesar de estar em todo tipo de mídia, esse gênero nasceu na literatura e a americana Gertrude Barrows Bennett é que recebe os créditos de ter inventado o gênero, no entanto antes dela já existiam histórias desse tipo, como a própria Máscara da Morte Rubra que é de 1842, enquanto a escritora nasceu em 1883.
Outra coisa é que existe uma briga e alguns escritores defendem que o termo deve ser usado não apenas para universos de fantasia, mas para qualquer coisa que envolva algo sombrio como fundo. Ou seja, isso inclui romances como Crepúsculo, que tem vampiros como protagonista e comédias como O estranho mundo de Jack, que é completamente sombrio.
Apesar disso, sou do grupo que vê o termo mais para o ambiente de fantasia pesada mesmo, acho que define muito mais do que algo bagunçado como "Tudo que tem monstro", é verdade que é sombrio e é fantasia, mas esses termos são inventados exatamente para que pessoas saibam exatamente do que estão falando, e tem tantas coisas completamente nada a ver umas com as outras que usam esses dois elementos, então colocar algo tão amplo acaba fazendo com que o termo não sirva pra definir muita coisa.
Um dos subgêneros de Dark Fantasy que tem um imenso destaque é o Sword and Sorcery, que normalmente está sempre presente em histórias de Dark Fantasy, isso porque seu foco é mostrar principalmente um personagem ou um grupo, sem se importar muito com a história do ambiente ao redor.
Enfim, universos tradicionais de fantasia faz pessoas terem vontade de viver lá, pensam em magias brilhantes, em batalhas épicas e vitórias, as coisas ruins são secundárias. Em Dark Fantasy é exatamente o contrário e o foco é em tudo que tem de pior nesses ambientes, doenças, injustiças, mortes grotescas, maldições tomando lugares e etc. Espero que a postagem tenha sido útil para quem gosta desse tipo de coisa, existem vários livros, filmes, jogos, etc, que usam esse gênero, no entanto muitas vezes acabam ocultos em meio aos universos padrões de fantasia. No Brasil existem algumas obras do gênero lançadas, mas na maioria das vezes não colocam na descrição e isso acaba dificultando na hora de achar. Mas digam aí, vocês recomendam alguma obra do gênero?
