Episode IV and Three Quarters
Last weekend Ninjasaurus and I met up to continue the game of Star Wars Miniatures Battles that was interrupted the other week, by my better half being ill. This time she was at home, so if she did fall ill again I wouldnt have to travel out to Sheffield to get her! (she is all recovered now, by the way, just a case of very bad flu). So we picked up where we left off, I set the table up as it was and the figures were laid out back in position. From the previous game, we had just reached the morale phase and dice were rolled and everyone passed, so it was on with the action!
The red Stormtrooper squad advanced from the central woods to tackle the Rebels hidden in the opposite woods. So far, so good.
On my right flank the Blue Stormtrooper Squad moved up towards the hedge row and exchanged some fire with the Rebels who had spread themselves widely in a defence line. I killed one and wounded another, but two of my troopers fell wounded whilst another was incapacitated.Things were not so good on this flank.
The Red Rebel squad around the woods took shelter behind the trees and the hill line, out of sight of my advancing soldiers.
Meanwhile on the right flank, after an exchange of fire, both the Stormtroopers and the Rebels failed their morale and both were forced to withdraw!
Its not surprising, since the Stormtroopers had taken quite a hammering by this point.
I moved in a pincer attack with two squads on the Rebel HQ and Red squad situated in the woods (carefully avoiding the cat wompa on the left...) and set up ready to pour blaster fire into the defenders!
But then disaster struck as a Rebel grenade killed two and injured six of my red squad!
Another came flying out at my Green squad and did almost as much damage!
As the firing is simultaneous in SWMB, I was able to destroy his HQ and good few of the Rebel soldiers in the woods, but things were looking pretty bleak!
However, I pulled the men together and launched a charge on the Rebel held wood. As I had double the amount of attackers than defenders, I didnt need a morale test to see if they would charge.The Rebels rolled their receiving a charge test and passed that as well.
But just as I was pairing off the melee, the Rebels over the hill launched their own counter attack and hit my men in the flank and rear!
A furious clash saw some casualties, but more devastating for me was the morale collapse of my troopers, who fell back from the fight!
Seeing victory slipping away from me, I sent the remainder of the green squad into the woods to try and finish off the Rebels.
The Rebels pulled out their remaining grenades, the first of which killed the entire Red squad, largely because they were already wounded. The other grenade, thankfully for me, fell short and actually nearly wiped out the remaining Rebels!
Things had been quiet on the right flank until I began moving the remaining Stormtroopers into a position to support the woodland melee. This brought them into sight of the second Rebel squad, whos blaster fire reduced their number!
More morale failures saw this squad also fleeing for the table edge. At this juncture I threw in the towel, both of my remaining squads were badly mauled and I would have needed some pretty good morale rolls to get them fighting fit again. The Rebels held the area and were the clear victors.
We finished off the day with a quick (ish) game of Medieval Mastery, a board game I picked up cheap recently. It was a bit of a cross between Risk, Settlers of Catan and Small World. Once we had the rules down, it was easy enough to play with only a few glances at the rule book. One to check out.

Passageiros Um ótimo filme vendido da forma errada
A história não é o que se pode ser chamada de inovadora, apresenta uma ideia que já vimos na ficção científica há séculos em filmes como Alien e Pandorum. Então aqui temos uma nave espacial levando uma tripulação de 5000 pessoas para um novo planeta. A viagem é programada para durar 120 anos, porém uma das câmaras de hibernação abre apenas 30 anos depois do início da viagem e embora a nave forneça todo tipo de luxo, incluindo comida e um androide barman que conversa, ainda serão 90 anos até o destino.
Acho que o que causou a frustração de mita gente foi exatamente o fato de um dos trailers querer vender a coisa como se fosse um dos filmes que citei. Ou seja, é aquela coisa de "Não foi por acaso eu ter despertado... Alguma coisa aconteceu na nave!". Passa aquela sensação de filme que vai ter uma super reviravolta, uma revelação grandiosa. Mas a verdade é que é um filme completamente suave mesmo.
Mas isso não quer dizer que seja um filme ruim, pra falar a verdade ele é ficção científica de alto nível, com doses variadas de várias coisas, mas terror não é uma delas. Pra falar a verdade acho que é um filme perfeito para casais assistirem. Não é algo super meloso e tal, mas é uma coisa filosófica que te faz pensar em vários elementos e amor é uma das coisas que acaba se pensando.
O filme é longo pra caramba, tendo quase duas horas de duração e a primeira "fase" do filme é demorada pra caramba, pra quem for assistir baseado no trailer que vende errado isso pode parecer uma eternidade. No entanto o filme tem vários momentos em que são ápices e isso é algo bastante agradável, pois é como se entrasse em uma nova fase da história.
A atuação é espetacular, o filme tem uma das cenas de ódio mais fortes que já vi, tanto pela brutalidade da coisa quanto pelo fato de você conseguir sentir a energia. A raiva extrema e a reação da pessoa que está sendo espancada. É uma cena que faz pensar sobre o assunto e em como a situação é complicada.
Os efeitos especiais são maravilhosos demais! Eles usam não apenas coisas lindas de se ver como a grandiosidade do espaço, mas coisas inusitadas como alguém em uma piscina quando de repente a gravidade artificial é desativada e o horror de tentar sair de dentro de uma bolha de água voando. É muito bacana.
Enfim, o negócio desse filme é que você tem que ir assistir pensando nele apenas como uma boa ficção científica, não tem terror, não tem grande reviravolta, mas tem muitos momentos que te fazem pensar "E agora, o que vai acontecer?", então não vá assistir pensando que é um filme tenso. Quem se interessar pode conferir aqui. Eu fiz essa postagem completamente sem spoilers, recomendo demais não assistir nenhum dos trailers pois ele entrega demais, tirou muito da graça quando fui assistir, mas se ainda assim quiser ver, aqui está:

Um texto publicado no último domingo no blog Bits, do The New York Times, questiona a eficácia dos avisos que alertam sobre os riscos de se usar celulares e outros aparelhos eletrônicos durante viagens de avião. Segundo o repórter Nick Bilton, não há evidências suficientes que mostrem que tal ação reduza de maneira relevante o risco de quedas.
Para provar seu ponto, Bilton afirma que, mesmo com os avisos, é mais do que certo que uma porcentagem mínima das pessoas se esquece de desligar algum aparelho considerado prejudicial pelas companhais aéreas. Mesmo assim, nos últimos anos nenhuma queda de aeronave foi atribuída ao uso de dispositivos como smartphones, tablets e leitores de ebooks.
Caso o uso de dispositivos do tipo fosse realmente perigoso, o repórter argumenta que o Departamento de Segurança Nacional e a Administração de Segurança de Transportes dos Estados Unidos sequer permitiriam que os passageiros embarcassem com eles.
Medo das novas tecnologias
Bilton afirma que o medo dos efeitos provocados pelas novas tecnologia é o principal responsável pela permanência dos avisos, especialmente quando elas utilizam sinais eletromagnéticos para se comunicar. Porém, ele afirma que até o momento não há estudos conclusivos que mostrem perigo real em se falar ao celular durante um voo.
Les Dorr, porta-voz da FAA (Federal Aviation Administration, ou Administração Federal da Aviação), afirma que o órgão estar errada nesse sentido quando se trata de dispositivos digitais usados em aviões. Para reforçar seu argumento, ele cita um estudo de 2006 inconclusivo, que não mostrou qualquer efeito negativo dos aparelhos sobre os aviões – embora também não tenha provado que a possibilidade não existe.
Riscos desnecessários
Segundo Bilton, a obrigação de desligar aparelhos durante a decolagem e o voo são os reais responsáveis por criar interferências desnecessárias aos aparelhos das aeronaves. Quando dispositivos eletrônicos são acionados, enviam uma corrente elétrica que passam por todo o seu hardware, incluindo GPS, WiFi, microprocessador e rádio.
No caso de dezenas (ou centenas) de aparelhos sendo ligados ao mesmo tempo, os sinais eletromagnéticos gerados são suficientes para provocar mais danos do que se eles estivesem ligados desde o início do voo. Com o crescimento do mercado de dispositivos portáteis e a falta de pesquisas que comprovem o risco oferecido por aparelhos digitais, talvez seja mais do que hora das companhias aéreas reverem suas políticas nesse sentido.
